Find the value of your stamp collection
You’re cleaning out your grandfather’s attic and come across a binder filled with sheets and sheets of stamps, and now you’d like to find out what they’re worth. It’s not as easy as one may think. There are many varieties of stamps circulating in the world. Some are worth no more than face value but some have been sold for over one million dollars. Our Savvy Specialists are here to provide expertise in determining the value of your stamp collection.
HOW TO FIND THE VALUE OF STAMP COLLECTIONS
Like coins, the good news about stamps is that they’re always worth at least face value if they haven’t been used. If the stamp has been used (cancelled), it is much less valuable than a stamp that has never been used. If a stamp is cancelled, in order to be valuable, it needs to be older and unusual. The age of a stamp is much harder to determine than coins, as it’s usually not printed on the stamp itself. Typically, the design on the stamp, any historical references, or the type of paper will help identify the age. The country of issuance is important to note in the valuation. Like many collectibles, the condition of the stamp will also play a role in determining the value as well as the style of perforation and the type of material used as an adhesive.

MAXIMIZING THE VALUE OF MY STAMP COLLECTION
The number one rule in stamp collecting is do not touch your stamps. Fingerprints, dirt, and grime will devalue the stamp and potentially smudge the stamp face. Use stamp tongs whenever you handle the stamps. Keep you stamp collection away from humidity, excessive temperatures, light, fire, household pests, and any sort of force that may rip, tear, bend, or otherwise damage the stamp. Stamp collections housed in albums or stockbooks are easier to value.
